Descripción
Apothecary mortar in Verona red marble with a jasper and lapis lazuli inlay - Italy, Florence - 19 century
In excellent condition, perfectly intact

Gorgeous apothecary mortar in Verona red marble with a jasper and lapis lazuli inlay (Jasper is a aggregate of microgranular quartz and/or chalcedony with iron inclusions, rich in distinctive bands of colour and therefore used as a semi-precious stone).
With a remarkable, beautiful hand carved decoration around the central inlay.
This mortar dates back to the 19th century, and comes from a rich pharmacy in Florence, where it was sometimes used as a bowl to mash or shred spices and herbs.
This is an extremely rare item, and a one of a kind; the Breccia inlay, the presence of lapis lazuli and the decoration enhance the item’s quality and value. Lively and bright, it’s a prestigious and flawless item.
