Saint Rita was born at Roccaporena in Italy in 1381, a village four kilometres east of Cascia. When she was lying in her cradle (according to the legend) bees flew in and out of her mouth, feeding her honey. Rita was beatified by Pope Urban VIII in 1628. Her canonisation, by Pope Leo XIII, followed in 1900. The devotion to Saint Rita was mainly spread by the Augustinians, and especially by the prioress Maria Teresa Fasce, who lived from 1881 to 1947.
Saint Rita is known as the patron saint of hopeless cases. She is called upon in cases such as exam anxiety and smallpox.
