This flat bottom bronze recipient has the same shape as the terracotta jars, of which these are a more prestigious version, for the sanctuaries of the palace.

They probably contained ritual products and the two handles might indicate that it was destined to be hung. Many bronze recipients of similar shapes were found, but with different ornamental designs. This piece is adorned with a face in relief, this iconography is related to Osun, the deity personifying medicine, with dedicated altars usually covered with jars containing water, renowned to attract snakes.

A similar bronze jug can be found on page 424 of the ‘Benin, Cinq siècles d'art royal’ book.
