This is one of the best known traditional Mossi sculpture, the mask is crowned with a female figure, which is the reason why it is categorized as Karan - Wemba. This type of mask is used to commemorate the early times of the clan, with a representation of the female procreative ancestor.

The stylized oval face mask with its vertical central bridge indicates that it comes from the Yatenga region. The Mossi mask from this region look like the masks used by the Dogon in Mali and reflect their common history. Five centuries ago, when the Mossi states were founded, some Dogon living in this area were assimilated into Mossi society, while others fled to the present home of the Dogon around the Bandiagara cliffs.
