Albumen photograph, hand-painted with watercolour, attributed to the studio of Felice Beato in Yokohama (2nd half 19th c.). It comes from the Antonio Ferri (*) collection evaluated by Finarte in Milan for the auction of November 2017 (please see catalogue page and detail of the description).
The cardboard was taken from a folding album - the same of photographs presented by Finarte - and it shows two photographs: a geisha in traditional costume with an elaborate hairstyle according to the Japanese ancient tradition. On the back there’s the photo of a street in Yokohama: it is likely the same where the laboratory of Felice Beato was. Words in pencil.
Small stain at the top left.
(*) Antonio Ferri is a scholar and collector of archaeological photography. Expert connoisseur of the activity of the Beato brothers - Among his publications ‘Il fotografo dei Faraoni - Antonio Beato in Egitto 1860-1905’.
