In the evolution of dinosaurs, archaeopteryx represents the transition from dinosaurs to birds. The name Archaeopteryx comes from Old-Greek and means something like ‘original bird’. This name of the prehistoric animal reveals a lot of its characteristics. The Archaeopteryx lived during the late Jurassic period, about 150 or 145 million years ago. Fossil remains of this feathered dinosaur have been found on the territory of what is now Germany. It used to live in this area, when Europe was still an archipelago of islands in the tropical sea. At that time modern day's Germany/Europe was situated at the height of the equator.
