Lucebert (1924-1994) was one of the most idiosyncratic artists of his period.
His work is both brutal and poetic. As a poet he was “De Keizer van de Vijftigers” (The Emperor of the Fifties), as a painter and graphic artist both the most consistent Cobra figure and the most extravagant.
Cobra (Copenhagen - Brussels - Amsterdam) was founded in the late 1940s by Asger Jorn, Karel Appel, Dotremont, Alechinsky and others, and for many years dominated the art world, which it initially opposed. Their art was direct, figurative-expressionist and ruthless. The pseudo-naive subjects and colorite give it a poetic dimension at the same time.
