Hillegom 1889-1957 The Hague
The artist Jan Simon Knikker snr. belonged to the group of painters who had a loose style of brushwork and perpetuated a preference for the tones and atmospheric displays of nature as did the Hagueish impressionists of the 20th century.
He is considered to be, just like his son Jan Knikker jr is, a part of the ‘second blooming’ of the Hague School. Knikker Sr. mostly painted water views, landscapes and cityscapes.
He lived and worked in Hillegom and Leiden and from 1914 in the Hague and Wassenaar. His work was very wanted internationally.
