A Ionic portal decorated with bust and niches.
Published in 'Architectura. Von den fünf Säulen...', Nuremberg: Caymox, 1598. It comes from the group of modello's of the Ionic style.
Etching in early impressions on laid paper with a most interesting watermark (post-horn, Gothic P)
This print has an important provenance, it comes from the Royal collection of prints at Munich. (Staatliche graphische Sammlung)
It has the collection stamp on the backside (Lugt.1614)
The second stamp 'Abgeschieden' means it was sold, probably because of the presence of a double in the collection.
Wendel Dietterlin (1550-1599) German architect, painter and engraver from Strassbourg. In 1590 he decorated the Stuttgard 'lusthouse'. He published a number of fabulous etchings in his major work "architectura". His fantastic designs show renaissance ornamentals and buildings, some of them still gothic from inspiration.
