Matsumi (Mike) Kanemitsu (1922 - 1992): Female Head. 1953, Charcoal on Paper. Signed, Dated in Pencil Lower Right.

Known for works with Japanese Sumi ink & brushes, watercolor, lithography, oil painting. His work is owned by a number of public institutions in the US and Japan. Raised in Hiroshima, in 1940 Kanemitsu returned to the US, enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1941. After the Pearl Harbor was detained and began to draw in camps with pen, ink and pastels. Released, volunteered for duty as a hospital assistant in Europe until 1946, travelled to Paris and studied with Fernand Leger. Studied in NYC Art Students League with Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Kanemitsu associated with the NY school artists: de Kooning, Kline, Jackson Pollock, who inspired his work in black-and-white watercolor.
