This photograph was taken in 1960 at a coal mine in the village of Horden, County Durham, where this miner had just emerged from working underground. Ironically Horden was a tight knit and warm community until the closure of its mine.
Patrick Ward is an English documentary photographer who has worked with European and American magazines since the 1960s.
