More about Mr Chat :
Thoma Vuille is a French-Swiss painter, born in Boudry in the canton of Neuchâtel in 1977. He is the creator of the ‘M. Chat’ graphic series, friendly feline character created in the streets of Orleans in an approach combining optimism and culture of proximity. Thoma Vuille started the street painting in acrylic when he was 15 years old, in memory of his grandfather who was a building painter. He studied at the Institute of Visual arts of Orleans from 1995 to 2001. The work of Thoma Vuille is a constant variation of the figure of M. Chat, whose line asserted itself over the years. The idea came to him in 1997 during a workshop in the Orléans school during which a little girl drawn a cat design which inspired the artist. Mr Chat is from the same booming of urban artists as Shepard Fairey (Obey), Ben Eine, Pure Evil, Ludo, Rero, C215, Jef Aérosol, JR, Swoon, Orlinksi, Speedy Graphito, Vhils, Ernest Pignon Ernest, Picasso, Atari, Panier, Hirst, Koons, Vu, D Face, Ron, Murakami, Shrigley, Polock, Koons, Dubuffet, Buffet, Kapoor, Wesselmann, Dine, Hockney et Os Gemeos. He then began to paint his cat on the walls of the city of Orleans, preferably near the roofs, with sole purpose of ‘bringing humanity and love to the city’. The design is simple, with a clear line: the smiling cat reminds of a logo at first. However, it cannot be reduced to this: ‘The cat is not a logotype variety, but it stealthily captivates us’. Initially from street art, he deploys his ‘cartoony silhouette’ in multiple positions, full-face or from side-on, with or without wings, alone or accompanied. Mr Chat is one of the most popular urban artist and sells in the most popular auctions in the world alongside Seth, Basquiat, Miss-Tic , André, JonOne, Zevs, Dran, Stik, Mr Brainwash, Kaws, Roa, Blu, Dolk, Toy, Bearbrick, Ai Weiwei, Dali, Hartung, Francis, Roy Lichtenstein, Haring, Combas, Warhol, Mesnager, Levalet, Blek Le Rat and Brusk. M. Chat has a strong identity, but supports variations. Its very simplicity allows it to reach a symbolic dimension. The smile of M. Chat, which was already on the drawing of the little girl who inspired him, is partly explaining the appeal of Thoma Vuille‘s work and helps, according to Nora Monnet (cultural editor / Artistik Rezo), making in ‘a manifestation of benevolence with a universal destination, a poetic proposal open to the world’. It evokes Lewis Caroll’s ‘grinning cat’ by its enigmatic and fascinating character. The art of Thoma Vuille took another dimension cutting loose from street painting. His performance, far from the individualistic world of graffiti, are intended to circumvent the usual reticence and share the art within a culture of proximity.
