Promotional poster for the first-ever concert of The Band on April 1969 at the Winterland, San Francisco. The performance would be remembered for many reasons, not the least of which was the two-hour delay caused by lead guitarist Robbie Robertson's mysterious illness. Bill Graham stalled the crowd and found a hypnotist to work on Robertson. It worked.
Limited edition of 1000 by Bill Graham Archives in 2006; printed on heavy paper.
This poster was designed by San Francisco native Randy Tuten, the only poster artist whose work spans five decades of design for the Winterland and the Fillmore venues. Tuten's style reflected his skill as a draftsman, and his designs evolved into an eclectic mix of graphic imagery, lettering and photographs.
