Beautiful selection of old and original geometric gold weights. A number have added lead to add weight. Calibrated Noteworthy is that 1 of the weights has an inducted channel where it can hang (see photo) The largest is 6.5 cm and the smallest 0.8 cm. The heaviest is 73 grams; the lightest is 1,7 grams. Nice patina of old age.
The Ashanti owe their rise and richness to the exploitation of huge gold resources.
Until the beginning of the 18th century, gold dust was the only means of exchange for the Ashanti. These were used until the late 19th century. Each merchant had his own weights, storage boxes, spoons and scale. The quantity depended on his position and prosperity.
The manifestations of the weights are made in two different periods. In the period from 1400 up to 1729, the geometric shapes were created, and from 1700 up to 1900, the figurative ones. T. Garrard
