Superb and rare Couple of ‘IBEJI’ Twins, from the Yoruba People in Nigeria.
Beautiful patina, adorned with colourful beads.
In the language of the Yoruba people, Ibeji means twin: IBI = born and EJI = two.
A fascinating story:
In the past, the birth of twins was a negative sign, with many superstitions, including the most tragical one, when the mother was accused of adultery, the twins birth supposing two fathers and revealing the mother’s infidelity, resulting in the murder of the mother and of her twins.
Considering that in the Yoruba country there is 1 birth of twins out of 22 births.
The systematic murder of the twins and of their mother did not encourage demographic growth.
This attitude suddenly changed in the first half of the century.
The Ibeji is therefore the guardian of the soul of the deceased. This is the reason why it is treated with the same thoughtful care than the one given to the living twin.
It comes from a private Belgian Collection.
