African Ram Mask - BAULE - Ivory Coast
Provenance: private collection, Belgium.
Dimensions: 46 x 23 cm.
Certificate of authenticity: included.
For several reasons, the Baule artistic corpus is different of the one from other ethnic groups. If for most ethnic groups masks represent mythical figures, the ancestors or the spirits of nature, it is not even among the Baule, who are convinced that the spirits are integral parts of the piece, reason why these objects have a particularly sacred nature.
Furthermore, Baule art quickly captivated the attention of collectors by the technique and aesthetic quality performed by the sculptors of this ethnic group, leading this corpus to be considered as the peak of achievement in terms of refinement and richness. This is a zoomorphic representation, of a ram more specifically. This African mask depicts a ram. Please note the smooth and ancient patina, as well as the perfect state of preservation. A bird tops the mask, its head a turned sideways.
