Louis Soonius (1883-1956) - Vissersvrouw in dracht

Louis Soonius (1883-1956) - Vissersvrouw in dracht
Óleo sobre lienzo - onbekend

Beautiful work, and beautifully framed by Niemeijer.

Louis Soonius was best known for his cheerful, sunny beach scenes, often with children and donkeys. These works, painted in striking colours, are among the most wanted works from his oeuvre. With the smooth manner he painted these animals, one can see that he is also a very talented artist. In addition, he has also painted landscapes, city and village scenes, (nude) figures and portraits. He made for example a portrait of Queen Wilhelmina commissioned by the Bataafse Petroleum Maatschappij.

Soonius studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and was a member of the Haagse Kunstkring. There he came into contact with other artists, including Arie Zwart. Soonius has worked his whole life in the area of The Hague. Before 1930 he lived for a few years in the village of Veur, now part of the Leidschendam. The Hague and Scheveningen were also easily accessible from Veur at the time. First by steam tram (on the route to Leiden) and from 1924 by electric tram. In the summer months Soonius enjoyed spending time on the beach of Scheveningen and nearby Katwijk.
