Hein Auke Kray is a Drenthe landscape painter. The painting has a wooden gilded frame of 7 cm. wide. The canvas is 68 cm. wide and 39 cm. high. Oil paint (?). It shows a sand wall with flowers, a puddle next to it and a pasture with cows in the distance. Above it is a richly varied cloud sky. The painting incl. frame is in very good condition.
Kray was born in Assen and received lessons from art teacher Jean Krans at the Rijks HBS. In 1922 he moved to the Hague, where he was an artist for the anti-revolutionary and satirical magazine the Houten Pomp. Kray was the main supplier of cartoons. He had drawing lessons from Eduard Houbolt.
Kray painted many landscapes of Drenthe. In 1946 he was involved in the founding of the artist collective the Drentse painters. He wrote and illustrated a number of children's books and illustrated books by Annie de Moor-Ringnalda, P.A. de Rover, Nel Verschoor-van der Vils and To van Thiel. Van Thiel was the pseudonym of Cateau Sijsma (1904-2001), whom he married in 1936. Together with his wife Kray also made cartoons for the Standaard and the Quartet magazines. He obtained the drawing certificate in 1933 and taught at various schools in Groningen and Drenthe.
