HAMILTON, Sir William (1730-1803) - This engraving from the rare book- 1767 Collection of Etruscan, Greek and Roman antiquities by the Hon William Hamilton. NAPLES Vol 1 Engraving Plate 56.
A rare example published in Naples this is a neo-classical engraving which was hand-coloured - at the time of publication. in red and black. It illustrates a highly detailed motif on one of Hamiltons Ancient Greek vases - before being passed to the British Museum in London.
Sir William Hamilton was British ambassador to Naples from 1764 to 1800 giving grand tours to British Aristocrats. There in Naples Hamilton assembled a fine collection of Greek and Roman antiquities. Before his collection was shipped to England, Hamilton arranged for the drawing of each and every item which he then used to illustrate his book of 1766-1767. This engraving comes from that extremely rare book.
