African “Byeri” statue of the Fang from Gabon.
Each family has a "Byeri" or reliquary box, in which the bones of ancestors are kept. These boxes were kept by the oldest man of the village, the “esa”. Reliquary boxes were topped with a figurine or a head which acted as a guardian of the “byeri” boxes. These boxes were kept in a dark corner of a square and fulfilled an apotropaic function (magic or many forms of superstition, touching wood is a gesture of apotropaic virtue) and were also used. at the initiation ceremonies for young people linked to the "So" society.
