Leo Gestel, along with Jan Sluijters and Piet Mondrian, was among the most important innovators in Dutch painting. He received his first drawing lessons from his father Willem Gestel, Director of Woerdense Avondteekenschool. Leo Gestel then attended the Rijksnormaalschool for Teekenonderwijs (drawing classes) in Amsterdam and took evening classes at the State Academy of Fine Arts. In 1940, Leo started as an artist in the attic of Tweede Jan Steenstraat in Amsterdam.
