Descripción
Hermosos pesos geométricos de oro (20) - Bronce y plomo - Abrammuo - Akan Ashanti - Ghana
Siglos XVI - XVIII - En buen estado, usado con algunos signos de desgaste

A small collection of old and original geometric gold weights. Some have been brought to weight by adding lead and sometimes a corner is taken off to reduce the weight (calibrated). The largest one is 32 mm and the smallest 11 mm. The heaviest is 22 grams; the lightest is 1 gram. Nice patina of old age.

The Ashanti owe their rise and wealth to the exploitation of enormous gold sources.
Until the beginning of the 18th century, gold dust was the only means of exchange for the Ashanti. These were used until late 19th century. Each merchant had his own weights, storage boxes, spoons and scale. The quantity depended on his position and prosperity.
The appearance of the weights are made in two different periods. The geometric forms were made between 1400 and 1729, the figurative ones between 1700 and 1900. (T. Garrard)
