Wonderful Dance Mask – Yombe – D.R.C.
In good condition, but with clear signs of use. It dates to the 1930 – 1940 period or even prior to that. On stand.
Provenance: Ex – collection of Martin Coppens, Eindhoven. Bought from him by H. Westerdijk in 1983.
Dance masks of the Yombe can be roughly divided into two groups .Those that have served members of an initiation cult called Ndunga that functioned as a sort of informal policeforce to support and protect the political elite and a second category that were carried by diviners or so called banganga diphomba. This mask is most likely a specimen out of the second group and was used by a witchdoctor when working to heal clients and to detect who had attacted them . The most striking features of this fine mask are the application of three colours in the face, the incised teeth in the upper jaw and the glass-inset eyes, all typical Yombe style characteristics. Nice dry interior. As in some rare cases, this mask is carved in medium density wood and not in very light wood like Ricinodendron, Alstonia or Bombax.
