An impressive Japanese partly gilded and black, brown and green lacquered wood sculpture of Buddha, Edo (1614-1868), late 18th century, ca 32.5 cm. high, total height ca 49 cm., 16.5 cm. wide and 16.5 cm. deep.
Buddha Amida Nyorai standing in a long robe on a triple lotus throne, his face with meditative expression, elongated ear lobes, the forehead with 'urna', the curled hair with jewel, the right hand raised, the left hand lowered (this combination is referred to as 'Gebon Jōshō' (下品上生) and is one of the 'mudras' of the so-called Nine Levels of Rebirth).
