An ancient marble high-relief dating back to the mid-800s, depicting the lion of San Marco. This lion of San Marco was masterfully carved from a single block of Istrian marble. The lion is the patron saint of the city of Venice and is represented with an open book, on which the motto "PAX TIBI Marce evangelista meus" is engraved. Peace be with thee, O Mark, my evangelist. The lion of St. Marco is a symbol of peace, prosperity and strength; it testifies to the domination of the city of Venice over land and sea. With a beautiful old patina. Please note the mane bulkiness! A beautiful museum-worthy lion. In excellent condition; it still bears 4 grooves where the iron clamps that supported it rested.
From a private Venetian palace.
