Provenance: private collection, Belgium.
Dimensions: 35 x 15 cm.
Materials: wood, raffia.

Traditional masks from the Mbuya village are used to entertain a community during non-ritual festivities.
Formerly, these masks were used for ceremonies of the Mukanda initiation, to mark the end of the rituals regarding masculine circumcision, Mbuya masquerades currently take place to enhance a certain number of figures and roles within the Pende society.
This piece was carved in a single piece of wood, the neck is integrally part of the mask.
The raffia headdress still remains.
Object of African art in beautiful state of preservation. Wonderful internal patina.
