Mengelberg started his training in Cologne at the Mengelbergsche Zeichenschule founded by his grandfather and sculptor Christoph Stephann. After his education, he opened his studio. After having made a name for amongst others, the bronze doors of the Cologne Cathedral - he left the studio to his brother and subsequently settled in Aachen. Thanks to the mediation of a curate, he was commissioned in 1869 to build the episcopal seat of the Bishop of Utrecht. As a result of the interest in the neo-Gothic style in the Netherlands, he settled in Utrecht in 1872 and created the interior of the Catharina Cathedral and the Willibrordus church. Mengelberg worked closely with Cuypers and in particular with Alfred Tepe. The Mengelberg house at the Maliebaan was also designed by Tepe. Like him, Mengelberg was also a member of the St.Bernulphus Guild that promoted building of Roman-Catholic churches in neo-Gothic style. In addition, Mengelberg was active as a creator of 'worldly' visual art. The Viennese composer and conductor Strauss belonged to the large number of their customers.
