18th century, Frechen, Germany.
The Bartmann jug with stamped belly is made in the Rhineland area around Cologne and is of non-porous sintered earthenware, so-called stoneware. The exterior of the jug has salt glaze. The height is 43 cm, the width is 25 cm.
The Bartmann looks daunting, scaring the evil spirits away. In long ago times, these jugs would be filled with nails, hair, finger nails and other items to fend off witches and evil spirits.
Condition: 1 small chip on the opening and a single hairline. See photos.
The jug would be a nice acquisition for anyone who collects jugs from Raeren or Frechen.
The jug will be sent well packaged and registered.
