Superb wayang kulit. It was part of the personal Sunan theatre in Surakarta, Pakubowono XI. The finesse of decorations and cut are at the top of the wayang kulit art, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage. Handles and sticks are made of horn. Height: 75 cm, 52 cm without the handle.
This was not a collector's item, but a puppet used in performances for the Sultan's family. The character is CAKIL, a brawling character.
Dalang did not spare its wayang, the combat scenes could be violent; It explains the use of thick buffalo leather, but also the marks on this puppet. The jaw has been carefully repaired so it can still be used in plays, proving this wayang kulit was a loved object.
The translation of the text into Javanese at the foot of the wayang means: ‘Made in 1902 in Semarang by Ki Nartasabda’.
