Rare test indirect percussion rifle Cordier Minié, Model 1862, second type, invented circa 1861 by commander MINIE (Ecole de tir de Vincennes) and made by gunsmith CORDIER. The grooved barrel for ball shooting is equipped with a backsight adjuster with board and sight, backsight adjuster graduated from 400 to 1100 metres, 12mm calibre minié ball, total length: 125 cm, barrel length 40 cm.
The impact is made via a rod located on the side of the barrel. Only part of the barrel is needed for precision. Perfectly registered with a single serial number and punched by the inventors on the breech tail C. C. in an oval and no. 999 and “MINIE BREVETE SGDG” no. 999 under the barrel. “999” on the internal barrel screw; lovely butt and mechanical part is in superb condition. The mechanism is perfectly functional, powerful percussion, lovely rifling on the barrel, a superb weapon for a collector or a casual shooter of old weapons.
This rifle is the result of ballistics studies on the calibre/length/rifling ratio, conducted by Commander Minié and adapted by Charles Cordier, in that a barrel of a length of 33 calibres was the ideal size for the best compromise of power/precision with the powders available in 1860.
