More about Drive By Shouting :

How were you approached by the band (Blink-182) ?
D*Face: “I’ve been friends with Travis [Barker, drummer] for a couple of years now – he came to one of my galleries a few years ago, and he’s bought a few of my pieces. He reached out to me about five weeks ago and said ‘We’re doing an album, and we need some artwork for it. Would you do it?’”

How did you come up with the idea for the artwork? Did the band give you a brief?
“It was quite tricky because time was the tightest thing, because I have a hugely-busy schedule – just like the band do when they’re touring. I’m all over the place painting, and I’ve got shows coming up and projects on the go. So for me, it was like: ‘You’ve been working on this album for a while, if you could have just given me a heads-up before now then I could have had time to find something for you!’ But they came back and said ‘anything that you do would be really cool for us, have you got anything that you’re working on that we could use?’
“The album title at the time was either going to be ‘Los Angeles’ or ‘California’ – there was also the name ‘Riot’ – all of which had good reference points in my work anyway. So I threw them a bunch of ideas because I really wanted to do it for them – I had a look at what I’d already got and what I’d been working on to see if anything fitted with those album titles. They sent me a couple of tracks, and gave me the brief that they wanted the artwork to represent California, but with a subversive side to show that it’s not always great and there’s always something under the surface, in the underbelly – which, predominantly, is what my work represents. So that was a perfect brief. “But those first ideas that I sent, they said ‘nothing’s really doing it for us.’ There was an illustration, however, that I’d worked on about a year and a half ago that I’d parked up and not got round to finishing. I looked at it and thought how California, to me, is about driving, the birth of the hot-rod and that whole lifestyle – so it made sense if it had a car in it. So that was the first checkpoint for me where I realised it was working. I sent that idea over and Matt [Skiba] and Travis were like ‘that’s the one. That the shit!’ But, to be honest with you, Mark [Hoppus] was like ‘I’m not so sure…’ – so it wasn’t straightforward, let’s put it like that!”

More about D*Face :

D*Face is one of the most prolific contemporary urban artists of his generation. Working with a variety of mediums and techniques, he uses a family of dysfunctional characters to satirise and hold to ransom all that falls into their grasp – a welcome jolt of subversion in today’s media-saturated environment.
His aim is to encourage the public not just to ‘see’, but to look at what surrounds them and their lives, reflecting our increasingly bizarre fascination for with celebrity, fame, consumerism and materialism, re-thinking, reworking and subverting imagery drawn from a refuge of decades of materialistic consumption, imagery appropriated from currency, advertising, comic books, these now iconic motifs, cultural figures and genres are subverted to comment upon our conspicuous society. D*Face comes from the same artistic movement as Banksy, Space Invader, Kaws, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Yves Klein, Takashi Murakami, Obey, Shepard Fairey (Obey), Ben Eine, Pure Evil, Ludo, Rero, C215, Jef Aérosol, JR, Swoon, Orlinksi, Speedy Graphito, Vhils, Ming, Ferrari, Rolex, Piguet, Ernest Pignon Ernest, Picasso, Atari, Panier, Hirst, Koons, Vu, D Face, Ron, Murakami, Shrigley, Polock, Koons, Dubuffet, Matisse, Delaunay, Buffet, Kapoor, Wesselmann, Dine, Hockney, Kapoor, et Os Gemeos. His work can be seen across a variety of different media applying his playful, tongue-in-cheek imagery with anti establishment values, he was also one of fifty artists commissioned to create a 50th anniversary Penguin book cover and is the only urban artist to date to be featured on the front cover of the fine art publication Art Review. His sell out solo shows ‘Death & Glory’, ‘EyeCons’, ‘aPOPcalypse now’, ‘All your Dreams Belong to Us’ along with last years Los Angeles show ‘Going Nowhere Fast’, which included his largest mural to date, and ‘Burn Brighter’ his debut Australian show have firmly founded D*Face’s presence within the global contemporary art market whilst retaining his notoriety. His work regularly sells at Christies, Sothebys and Bonhams auction houses and yet he still continues to put his work illegally into the public domain, and as such has extensively traveled the world showing and disseminating his artwork. In 2005 D*Face set up the gallery ‘StolenSpace’, which continues to be Londons foremost contemporary urban art gallery. Today D*Face is a world-renowned artist, these works are sold in the biggest auction houses alongside the greatest artists of urban art such as Seth, Basquiat, Miss-Tic , Mr Chat, JonOne, Zevs, Dran, Zao Wou Ki, Klimt, Stik, Soulages, Mathieu, Mr Brainwash, Kaws, Roa, Blu, Dolk, Toy, Bearbrick, Ai Weiwei, Dali, Hartung, Francis, Roy Lichtenstein, Haring, Combas, Warhol, Mesnager, Levalet, Blek Le Rat and Brusk. In 2010 he created the artwork for Christina Aguilera’s number one selling album ‘Bionic’, Christina has been a long time collector of D*Face’s work. 2011 marked a busy year for D*Face, between his two solo exhibitions in Los Angeles and Melbourne he found time to make a return visit to the Ridiculous Pool in San Bernardino, where he debuted a unique technique combining his love of skateboarding with live painting. - [ ] D*Face inspiring a lot of brand as Timberland, Off White, Jordan, Fear of God, Versace, Boss, Moncler, Arman, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Supreme, Bape, Champion, Comme des Garçons, Dover Street Market, Superdry, Carhartt, Kenzo, Yeezy, Givenchy, Jimmy Choo, Rick Owens, Kenzo, Louboutin, Chanel, Saint-Laurent, Zanotti, Valentino Fendi, Margiela, Piaget, Tiffany & Co, Dinh Van, Mikimoto, Gucci, Hermès, Mauboussin, Damiani et Boucheron, Nike, Puma, Reebok, Vans, Converse, Under Armour, New Balance, Asics, Skechers, Forever 21, Fila, Mizuno, Balenciaga, Bulgari, Yeezy, Balmain, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Buccellati, Stone Island, Vetement, & Philippe Plein.
