A rare late 18th century Russian icon in western style.
It depicts the head of John the Baptist on a tray stained with blood. His cross-staff with phylactery (with the word "lamb") is placed near his head. The tray is placed on a small table covered with a blue tablecloth. To the right, the curtain of the same colour, with golden fringes, dramatises the scene. Above the martyr's head, three cherubs look at him and seem ready to welcome him to Heaven. A Cyrillic inscription completes the composition.
The back and edges of the wooden board are covered with an old fabric.
The silver riza, from a later date, has two inscriptions in Cyrillic as well as stamps ("A-K 1847", "84", the image of Saint George with the dragon, initials in Cyrillic P and C).
