DESIGN EVOLUTION OF THE PANTON CHAIR
When Verner Panton arrived in Basel one day in the early 1960s with the model of an unconventional plastic design chair in his luggage to meet Willi Fehlbaum, the founder of Vitra and father of Rolf Fehlbaum, neither the designer nor the entrepreneur suspected what far-reaching consequences their meeting would soon have brought forth. For the designer, the long search for a manufacturer for his extravagant chair came to an end. The chair came on the market a few years later under the name Panton Chair, and it quickly became a designer icon.
SERIAL PRODUCTION OF THE PANTON CHAIR
After several years of development, which Rolf Fehlbaum had been an essential part of since 1965, the Panton Chair was finally ready for serial production in 1967. But soon after the sensational market introduction of the chair, a series of modifications to the design began, because material and production technology were changed several times. The different versions of the Panton Chair testify to the innovative strength and the experimental pleasure of both designer Verner Panton and the company that wanted to put the designer chair on the market. The contact between Verner Panton and Vitra remained exceptionally close and lively for years, thanks to the Panton Chair.
