Alfonsus Petrus Josephus (Fons) Verstraeten was born in Delft on 20 January 1922. He spent his youth in Nijmegen and Venlo. As a painter and draughtsman he worked in Nijmegen and in Unterseen (Switzerland). He died in Unterseen on 24 August 2017. Fons Verstraeten had a good observational ability to convey the subject nicely in the painting. As is the case with this piece, in which he managed to beautifully capture the Irises in the garden. The flower splendour comes into its own in this impression of a spring garden. The painting was recently varnished and in good condition. The painting was signed on the bottom right by the artist and was presumably made in the first half of the 20th century. This genre was not a favourite of Fons Verstraeten and is therefore unique in his oeuvre.
