The War Cross with the three languages of Belgium, also called "Croix de guerre" e "Kriegskreuz", was established on 25 October 1915 by Royal Decree (War Cross 1914-1918) and renewed on 20 July 1940 by the Belgian government, which had fled to London (War Cross 1940-1945). Belgian King Leopold III was a prisoner of the Germans at the time.
The award was intended for bravery and was awarded to soldiers of ground, sea and air forces. In special cases, other nationalities and foreign military units could also receive the award. In this case, soldiers would receive a banner decoration.
The War Cross has been awarded for heroic deeds against the enemy.
