Roland Topor (Paris, 7 January 1938 - Paris, 16 April 1997) was a French illustrator, cartoonist, comic book artist, novel, stage, film and television writer, film maker and actor who was known for the surreal nature of his work. Topor was of Polish-Jewish descent and spent the first years of his life in Savoy where his family hid him from the Nazis.
Topor was best known for his absurd and somewhat macabre cartoons, including some for Charlie Hebdo. He also made illustrations for books by, among others, Tolstoi, Marcel Aymé, from his own surrealistic and satirical view of the world. [1] Almost all his novels and short stories have a cruel character. He wrote his first novel, le Locataire chimérique wrote in 1964. It was filmed in 1976 by Roman Polanski as The Tenant.
