The book is still in very good condition after 70 years, with only a few very slight signs of use.
About the photographer
Ata Kandó was born in Budapest as Etelka Görög. She came from an intellectual family. The surname Kandó came from her first husband Gyula Kandó, with whom she had three children.
Ata Kandó died two days before her 104th birthday.
Education and work
In the 1930s, Kandó and her husband spent two periods in Paris. In 1935 Kandó studied photography in Budapest. In 1938, during their second stay in Paris, she opened her own studio on the Avenue de l'Opéra. With her husband she was active in the resistance. After the war the couple left for Paris again, but her husband wanted to return to Hungary so that Ata and their three children were left behind. In Paris, in 1950, she met the photographer Ed van der Elsken, with whom she moved to the Netherlands in 1954 and married, but divorced a year later.
