Paul Matthes (1872-1956) - Rotterdam, 12 origineele etsen van Paul Matthes
Oskar Paul Matthes (Koningsbergen (D) 24.01.1872 – Bergholz-Rehbrücke (D) 16.03.1956) was a German painter, draughtsman, etcher and lithographer, who lived and worked in the Netherlands (Zaandam) from 1901 to 1910. He etched many cityscapes, and 12 of his etchings of Rotterdam are, originally printed on heavy paper by Van Gelder, collected in this "booklet", which is held together by a red string. It was published by W. de Haan in Utrecht. On the inside of the cover a stamp from office bookstore L.M. Lammerse, Hoofdsteeg no. 41, Rotterdam.
The etchings show the following Rotterdam cityscapes:
1. Krattensteeg and Leeuwenstraat, with mill De Hoop (Coolsingel) in the background
2. The Steiger and the Soetenbrug with behind it the Leuvehaven
3. Rotterdam Schie with mills
4. Geldersche Kade and White House
5. Gedempte Botersloot, Cheese Market with town hall
6. Kolk and West-Nieuwland
7. Kolk with railway viaduct and Laurenstoren
8. Het Steiger
9. Coolsingel with mill De Hoop
10. Rotterdamse Schie with Delftsche Poort and Laurenstoren
11. Haagseveer?
12. Hoogstraat?
The etchings are all 11 x 7 cm on a sheet of 20 x 13 cm. Some are signed in/under the plate P. Matthes, sometimes with Zaandam behind it, and no. 3 also dated 1909. Matthew was probably left-handed, because he wrote tilting backwards heavily.
