Jean-Marie Henri Berckmans (Mol, 28 October 1953 - Antwerp 31 August 2008) was a Flemish writer who published under the name JMH Berckmans. At the age of 11, he and his family moved from Leopoldsburg to Antwerp for economic reasons. Berckmans started writing in the sixties. His pseudonym referred to the Dutch writer Maarten (JMA) Biesheuvel. Throughout his life he struggled with severe bipolar disorder and persistent addictions to drinking and smoking. In the 1990s he was a member of the rock theatre group Circus Bulderdrang. Berckmans' short prose deals with hard personal and social struggles on the fringes of society. In the mid-1990s he was considered the godfather of 'generation nix'. His style often refer to jazz, rock music, popular language and science. His work is highly influenced by writers like Beckett, and the way they made an existential radiography of existence. The beat poets, including Ginsberg, also influenced some of his books such as ‘Het zomerert in Barakstad’ - considered by many as his masterpiece. Within Flemish literature he is part of the tradition of self-willed, self-made writers who know how to create their own language universe, such as Streuvels, Boon and Michiels. He sometimes reffered to himself as ‘de man van staal’ or ‘Pafke, het meest concrete mafke’.

Books by Berckmans are almost impossible to find.
