Trilobite - Caparazón - Drotops armatus

Trilobite - Caparazón - Drotops armatus
DEVÓNICO (358,9 – 419,2 millones de años) - Erfoud

This is a very beautiful and rare long specimen "super thorny trilobite, Drotops armatus. With about 100 free spines. This plate presents a rarely seen example of a trilobite related to Drotops megalomanicus (Phacops). This is largely different from the fact that there is a profusion of protruding thorns on all surfaces, even the eyes! This one is forma armata with thorns up to 10 mm long. Armatus means armed; and the weaponry here was a response to the pressures of predation. This would have been a mouthful for all predators attacking from any neighborhood. There are OVER 20 thorns preserved here, making it a wonderful example of an evolving salvo in the predator / prey arms race. Its size is rather good for the species, it is well prepared and has a magnificent natural and multicoulored colouring of shells and the thorns are all original
