[TITUS LIVIUS [INCUNABLA] - GOTHIC PRINT] Les Décades de Titus Livius, translatées
en françoys (par Pierre Bercheure ou Berchoire). Volume I alone (of 3 published) Paris, En la Grant Rue St-Jacques (Jean Dupré), 1486, small folio, full olive green sheepskin, spine with raised bands decorated with gilded fleurons and compartments (post. bindings, circa late 18th century, some light surface damage), 13 sheets. prelim. and 368 numbered sheets [3 sheets prelim. missing pieces including 2 blanks, a1 (blank), a8, b8 (blank), the text is quite complete with all of its sheets, only the 1st sheet is reinforced in the lower margin and and sheet 176 has a small tear on the corner with the loss of some words]. Good copy.
in a sober binding.
This very rare edition printed in a beautiful Gothic font, in 2 columns with 35 lines. The font is that which was used for Lancelot du Lac printed in 1488 as well as others published at the same time by Jean Dupré. Five initial letters are painted in red and
blue and many capital letters and headings are painted red. This book contains 10 lovely engraved woodcut vignettes in the text [Jean Dupré was the first Parisian typographer who introduced engraving into books]. Two 18th century intaglio engraved portraits of Titus Livius are included and not inserted into the book.
This 1st volume of the Décades de Tite-Live, trans. in the Middle Ages by P. Bercheure, French Benedictine scholar, prior of St-Eloy, is very rare and the copy offered here is very crisp inside. It seems that there is only one instance of all 3 complete volumes (at the British
Library) and sparse volumes in French libraries (B.N., Ste-Geneniève, Mazarine) or abroad.
