Great dance mask – Guro – Ivory Coast

In good condition but clearly of vintage age. It dates to the first quarter of the 20th century. On stand.

Provenance: Ex – collection of Eva Müller- Lionarons, The Hague. Bought from her by H. Westerdijk in around 1960.Obtained by her in Paris just prior to the second world war.

This splendid work of art shows all of the solemn grace for which old Guro pieces are famous. Every part of it is worn, from the interior to the figure on top of the elongated, narrow face. Typical are the keloïd patterns on forehead and cheeks which are spared and lay upon the flat surrounding surface. The hairdo is classical and tripartite. The eyes are just half-moon shaped narrow slits with heavy upper lids. The top figure is male, but its hairstyle shows the female variant with a Koranic box through which the raised hair falls to one side in a kind of tuft. The mask falls into the Guro category of dance objects. These Gu masks are female and represent an elegant lady of distinction, who is seen as the wife of Zamblé, another major model in Guro culture. Her dance is seductive and she tries to praise and please her husband. These Gu dances or Gula are public and serve to amuse the crowds. The figure on top represents the fine child the Gu-lady wishes for in her dreams.
