Some argue that the Taotie is the representation of a fantastic animal like a dragon; others say it is simply the union of two animal profiles (perhaps tigers). Others claim it is drawn from a helmet that represented power and authority, or that the motif represents the spirits of animals and men sacrificed in the rites of the Shang cult. Another theory is that the Taotie is actually the artistic image of the spirits of ancestors, represented in the form of a wild animal, and therefore it is the symbol of access to the world of spirits and ancestors, as in the culture of Shang.
