The RMS Titanic was the second of three luxurious ships from the Olympic-class which were suppose to handle a large part of the trans-Atlantic traffic. The ship was owned by the shipping company White Star Line and was built in Belfast. The Titanic hit an iceberg on its first journey shortly before midnight on the night of 14 and 15 April 1912. Part of the starboard side was penetrated in several places and the ship sank within three hours. 1,522 passengers died. Although this isn’t the largest shipping disaster by headcount in history, it is the best known, especially as the ship was known as ‘practically unsinkable’.
