Bodegas Juan Carlos Sancha is a winery located in Rioja Alta, one of the best-known wine-producing regions of Spain. This winery, operated in the town of Baños de Río Tobía (Rioja Alta) by Juan Carlos Sancha, a professor of enology at the University of La Rioja, is situated on five hectares of land along the border of D.O.Ca. Rioja, and in the coldest zone of this wine denomination.

This cooler location, in Baños de Río Tobía (Rioja Alta) in the Najerilla Valley, contributes to the high quality of their wines. Juan Carlos Sancha’s winery also has vines of minority varieties such as Tempranillo Blanco, Maturana Tinta, Maturana Blanca and Monastel de Rioja - varieties that he and his university colleague Fernando Martinez de Toda discovered, rescued from extinction, and developed. Professor Sancha then went on to found the first Rioja winery employing these minority varieties in commercialized wines.

In the last 20 years, Spain has uprooted over 100,000 hectares (247,105 acres) of Garnacha (Grenache). In the denomination of origin-Rioja, Garnacha has gone from representing almost 40 percent of total vineyard in 1973 to an astounding 8 percent in 2012.

For the first time in history, we will be able to enjoy six wines made from Garnacha from six unique vineyards, of almost 100 year-old vines, which have been hand-selected for their special location, exposure, and soil type. In Rioja, these vineyards are considered historic vineyards that have been cultivated for more than three-generations by "heroic" growers who have decided to keep these vineyards going, despite being economically unprofitable.

We have in our hands the history of Rioja, a wine terroir expressed through the combination of soil and climate, which is the essence of the great wines. In this case, we have the same varietal, same wine making technique (fermentation in barrels of 500 liters), same aging process (eleven months in French oak, Troncais), same viticultural area (Najerilla Upper Valley, Rioja Alta, one of the coolest areas Rioja), and a single variable: the terroir.

The grapes come from six different growers. Included in this is Juan Carlos Sancha’s own wine from 95-year-old Garnacha vines on high, south-facing slopes and terraces on a half hectare of land inherited from his grandfather. These are limited production creations, only 600 bts of each of the wines from his neighbours’ vineyards and between 1200 – 1900 bts from his own.
