Original woodblock print - Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Path along the Nihonzutsumi Embankment Leading to Yoshiwara - from the series "Forty-eight Selected Views of Edo" - 1892 Memorial Edition
This print was published in 1892 by Kodama Matashichi (active 1881-1894) and was printed with the original, partially edited woodblocks (the date/lettering in the margins were added) (1856-1858). The print is part of a memorial series, which consists of a selection of the 48 most memorable designs from the series "One Hundred Views of Edo". Many of the woodblock prints from the earlier editions are now extremely rare. This memorial series provides a good opportunity to obtain an original woodblock print of these classic Hiroshige designs.
For this 1892 original, see also https://ukiyo-e.org/image/waseda/201-2506
Impression: Very nicely executed "bokashi shading" in the sky and clouds.
Detailed "carving" and "printing", great attention to detail
What makes this later "Memorial Edition" print recognisably different from previous prints, is the presence of the extensive text in both the right and left margins. Also typical is the use of slightly brighter colours, which were popular in the mid Meiji period
Sizes (margins not included): 22.2 x 33.5 cm
Total dimensions: 24 x 36 cm
Good condition, partly helped by the fact that the print was kept in an album for a long time. Bright colours. Print has kept its original album backing. Please see the photos for details
