Cabeza de la Muerte Hawkmoth - en vitrina acrílica - Acherontia atropos - 11×8×2 cm
2019 - Alemania - non-CITES species

The death’s head hawk moth (Acherontia atropos) is a butterfly (moth) from the hawk moth family (Sphingidae), its core habitat are the African tropics. It is also seen in the far south of Europe, from where it migrates to central and northern Europe. Together with its two relatives from the genus Acherontia, this species is unique within the hawk moth family, as it can produce whistling sounds through a mechanism in its oral cavity. The way these moths live is also quite unique - they feed on honey and invade beehives to get it.
Because of their unusual way of life and their imposing appearance with the eponymous “death’s head” (skull) on their thorax, they were considered to be ominous animals that bring misfortune for a long time.
