RARE FOUNDATION CONE WITH CUNEIFORM WRITING
Ancient Near East, Sumeria, ca. 3rd millennium BC A very fine example of a foundation cone with approximately three quarters of its conical body covered with a dense cuneiform text, recounting the exploits of Isme-Dagan, the 4th king of the Isin dynasty. The body narrows into one point and the other end is wide and slightly concave. Clay nails like this are inscribed, baked and buried in the walls and under the floors of important buildings during construction to sanctify the site and create a historical memory of the sovereign and his achievements. These votive cones are a type of royal foundation deposit, objects that were made to mark the property either by a god or by a ruler. Hidden from view, these inscribed objects were often found during subsequent restorations of the buildings. The shape of the votive cones recalls the earlier foundation pegs (designed to pin the floor plan of a building), but this one provides additional space for inscriptions due to their cylindrical thickness. These dedications sometimes include stories or boasting about the described leaders, and they represent some of our earliest sources of written royal history.
The text is dense and written on 3/4 of the cone.
