There was great unemployment in the east of the Netherlands in the late 18th century. In cooperation with the city council George Birnie and Philippus Sauret opened a textile factory in Deventer. Fifty poor and their children started working in the factory. In 1816 they had over 150 workers and about 225 in the middle of the 19th century. The company on the Nieuwstraat grew into a large factory. When the building became too small a new factory was built on the edge of the city in 1904. The street was lated named Smyrnastraat.

Deventer rugs were delivered to i.a. the Royal Palace on the Dam in Amsterdam. In 1903–1904 a Deventer rug was delivered to the Knight's Hall and the old building of the House of Representatives in The Hague.

In 1978 the production of rugs in the factory in Deventer was halted.
