Botánica, Medicina - Cantidad: 1 - Libro

De medica materia libri sex/ Ioanne Ruellio suessionensi interprete. His accessit, praeter, pharmacorum simplicium catalogum, copiosus omnium ferme medelarum sive curationum index.

16mo: (4), 543, (146) pages, with woodcut printer's mark on title, lovely later vellum.

Title page with repaired corners and old owner's name Gustavus Adolphus Sabini and old other name in pen. Somewhat tanned throughout the block book, but still a good copy.

This is a well known pharmacopoeia of medicinal plants and the medicines that can be obtained from them. It is the most important herbal of the medieval and early modern period, widely circulated in manuscript (in the original Greek, in Latin and Arabic) and then from the sixteenth century it was translated into Italian, German, Spanish, and French, and in 1655 into English. It formed the basis for herbals in these languages by men such as Leonhart Fuchs, Rembert Dodoens, Carolus Clusius, John Gerard and William Turner. Gradually these herbals included more and more direct observations, supplementing and eventually supplanting the classical text.

The text was printed in several formats, from large folio to small, pocket-sized editions like the one listed here. Although a tiny book, its descriptions are remarkably precise, concentrating on medicinal uses but also including culinary applications.

Herbals well into the seventeenth century continued, like Dioscorides, to classify plants not by their structure or apparent relatedness but by how they smelt and tasted, whether they were edible, and what medicinal uses they had.

There are enormous indexes (plants and diseases) of around 100 pages, which make this a very helpful book. Super copy that presents very well (rare for a title which was generally used until it perished).
